The Chicago Bears' mascot, Staley, came to visit GMS. We danced, had contests, and a lot of fun on this perfect day. Claire and Mitchell got to participate in a "booty bounce contest." We think Claire might have a new favorite team!
This blog site is dedicated to the children and families of 1C. We will use it to celebrate our year with photos, as well as to help make connections between home and school using websites, word lists, calendars, and more!

Outdoor Education Day (OED) Scooter Soccer
We played scooter soccer in the gym. It's pretty tough, trying to use these scooters! Great exercise.
Outdoor Education Day (OED) Art
The class worked on a painting project where we had to paint sticks to be included in a mosaic created by the whole school. They also got to paint their own bookmarks for reading this summer.
Outdoor Education Day (OED) Team Building
We went to play a game called Hula Hut Throw Down with Mrs. Lavoy. It's a really neat game where children build hula hoop huts that balance, and are sometimes knocked down with gator skin balls. The children have to use strategy and teamwork to succeed in this game.
Outdoor Education Day (OED) Games
We kicked off the day by playing a variety of games including Alaskan Baseball, Bucket Relay, Catch the Tail, Steal the Bone, Hula Hoop race, and another relay.
Power Blocks
With much of our work on the first grade Common Core for math complete, we decided to take out a new manipulative called Power Blocks. These blocks of differing shapes and sizes can be used to help students better understand the concept of area, which will be covered with greater detail in 2nd grade.
Grimm Fairy Tales Trip
The class really enjoyed the trip to the BFAC, to see the Grimm's Fairy Tales musical. They liked how the story had twists to the plots we were already familiar with from classroom discussions and reading.
Playing with Air Pressure
The class enjoyed using syringes and rubber tubing to experiment with air. We learned how to use the pressure to pop the syringes off at targets

Skype Session with Mrs. Burns and her Kindergartners
We met up with our new friends in River Forest, IL. Mrs. Burns, and her kindergartners met us for a Skype session, to share our Earth Day projects. We shared some of our ideas from the Audioboo projects, and they talked about some of the eBooks they created. Don't forget to check out the blog that collected these creations: earthkidsk1.blogspot.com

Bike and Walk to School Day - May 7
Children of Grace McWayne School participated in the Bike and Walk to School Day on Wednesday. We have a large population of students who ride the bus, and an equally large number of students who ride in cars, each day. Bus students were dropped off at the Tanglewood Country Club parking lot, and walked to GMS. And so many children who live close either walked, rode scooters or biked. Great participation by all! Thank you volunteers, for coming to support and protect the children.
