Our Bell for the GMS Tree
In downtown Batavia, there's a collection of holiday trees which are decorated showing community spirit. Our Grace McWayne School tree has bells from every classroom. This is the bell we agreed upon in design and decoration. There's a double sided ringer on the bell that has our friendly faces. Look for it if you are downtown.
Fact Families
In math, we are using the commutative property to show how numbers can switch places, and still add up to the same amount. We make it more challenging by using different polyhedron dice.

Here's Avery and Vivian, Ashley and Kaitlyn, Rowan and Brayden, Jeremy and Nathan, as well as James sharing their opinions on great events during the first trimester.

Room 104.1C Batavia, Home of the Grizzlies!
Welcome to Room 104.1C Batavia, our own recording studio for 1C News.
This radio podcast allowed students to team up with partners having different writing goals, and to write an opinion article on a newsworthy event from the classroom.
Our first radio station podcast included stories about Veterans Day, Outdoor Recess, Mealworms and Halloween. Listen to Leni and Reese, Colten and Will, Annabella and Sidney, Allexia and Colin sharing their opinions on these great events from the first trimester.

Thank you, Veterans!
We had the pleasure and honor of getting to honor some special guests with our annual Veterans Day celebration. Later in the morning, we had a grandparent come to class and talked about his experiences while preparing and working on Naval aircraft, floating on a famous aircraft carrier. Very special day with moments we won't soon forget.

This Week in Pictures
We found time to see new stages of development with our mealworms, practiced adding three numbers together, and started researching facts and details about insects on Pebble Go. We will start our Insect Reporting next week, and would love to have some parents come join us on Thursday for a little "hat project."

Story Book Character Pumpkins with 5th Grade Buddies
Click below to read about our first grade/fifth grade buddy project where we met new story book characters, discussed their traits, and then created the characters using pumpkins. Unfortunately, all our photos are on the Seesaw digital portfolios, but this ARTICLE sums it up nicely.
Halloween Parade and Party
We walked out and had a terrific parade in the fresh air around GMS. We came back to a great party with our families, and completed a Halloween scavenger hunt, played Halloween Pictionary, scooped ghost poop, and made cute ghost decorations. Thanks parents for an awesome day!
Class of the Week: 10/27
We earned the distinction of GMS Class of the Week with our respectful, responsible and really safe behaviors around school. Way to go, Grizzlies!

Setting the Ladies Free
One aspect of our insects unit came to a close when the students set our Painted Ladies free to enjoy fresh flowers in the prairie, and to start the circle of life all over again.
Having hands on experiences like these will go a long way too!
Picking Pumpkins Off the Vine at Windy Acres
Before our ride out to the pumpkin patch, the children learned how they have been growing pumpkins at Windy Acres for 32 years. The staff of WA were very impressed by the questions and manners of our students, which they shared in a followup email. The children were able to connect our classroom studies to the actual pumpkin patch where we were picking pumpkins right off the vines. Priceless experiences which make for lasting memories and great schema (the file folders in your brain).
Windy Acres Full of Fun Experiences for All 10/22
We had many different experiences to draw on with our follow up writing activities. From large motor fun to interesting animals, we had two solid hours of "awesomeness" before getting to the pumpkin patch.
