The children had a busy week. We had some older students from 2nd and 3rd grade come solve our Winter Snow Stories (math scoot display). The children did a terrific job on the fact family creations using Pic Collage, and we have been building stamina while reading to self. February's short weeks are gone and now we've got some full weeks of first grade fun ahead.
This blog site is dedicated to the children and families of 1C. We will use it to celebrate our year with photos, as well as to help make connections between home and school using websites, word lists, calendars, and more!

Fact Family Pic Collages
We completed an iPad activity today where we demonstrated our understandings of Fact Families using the Pic Collage app. Lots of fun, and harder than we thought it would be! All student creations are in the 2014-15 Projects tab on the left.

Valentines for Holmstad - 2/14
Our fifth grade buddies from Mrs. Foster's class joined us for a special event where we made valentines for the grandmas and grandpas of the Holmstad Retirement Community in Batavia. The creations were shared with elderly husbands and wives who were reunited, as some are in a more specialized unit to receive extra special care. A Valentine Dinner celebration between the spouses was set up, and our valentines made it to the table for love and appreciation.

Versatiles and Groundhogs - Feb. 2
The children found out about the Legend of the Groundhog, which suggests that we're not done with winter just yet. Because Punxatawny Phil saw his shadow on Feb. 2, we're forecast to receive six more weeks of the winter weather. Like that comes as any surprise?!
We also found a new tool to use in our study of math. Versatiles are a special puzzle game which allows for multiple types of practice with problem solving using clocks, equations, shapes, numbers and more. If students put the pieces in just the right places when solving the problems, then they can flip the puzzle and check their work. Great tool, provided by our PTO last summer when we were able to order more manipulatives and tools for our Common Core Guided Math Workshop.
