Our Class Donations Have Been Built - Fun Fair '13

Our class now has a newly built pair of donations for the raffle. Special thanks to Sears, and the Ekey Family, for helping coordinate the donation and assembly of the bikes for our Fun Fair. We hope they go to an excited pair of children (whose families made sizable bids!). Will update later on our class donation of the gift card which can be used for an adult bike, or something else that Sears provides. Great job, 1C.

A Visit from the Lincoln's 2-20-13

Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln came to visit us today. They were so talkative, and answered many questions. They told stories of how they met, a different time that someone took a shot at Abe while he was out on his horse, as well as a little more history behind their family. Abraham made the children promise to stay in school and get a good education. He insisted that each of the children had the same chance he had, to one day become President of the United States. Mary Todd learned that our own KP is a member of the same family tree! Very cool. You can also see that they both have a terrific sense of humor.

The Tower Challenge - 2/15/13

The Tower Challenge was a science lesson where we applied what we knew about the properties of solids in order to create a tower that would stand as tall as we could make it. It was both challenging, and sometimes frustrating, for 1C friends to work with the limited materials of a rubber band, popcicle stick, piece of aluminum foil, straw, two cups and two squares of cardboard. Fun activity! At the end of the lesson, as we had played the role of ENGINEERS, we saw some work that other engineers had put together to help OK Go! create a music video. Seussical the Musical-- 2/8/13

The class took a trip to the Batavia Fine Arts Center to see Seussical the Musical. While we were not to take photographs of the actors in the show, we snuck in a few pictures of our friends patiently waiting for this magnificent show to begin. To prepare, we read a pair of Horton stories which were closely tied to the plot of this mixture of Dr. Seuss books. Rave reviews from the audience!

First Grade Flea Market

To practice our coin counting, and have a chance at making real purchases, we hosted our second annual First Grade Flea Market. Students bought and sold treasures from home, made change, and had a blast. One of their favorite activities of the year so far.

MLK Bulletin Board

One of the best samples of our first grade writing so far came when students shared all they knew in a narrative about Martin Luther King, Jr. These will be displayed for the next few weeks (until we get to American Presidents). Stop by and see them, or you'll get the chance to see these pieces at our Pride Night this spring. A sample here...

100 Parade (on 101st day...)

Our friends in kindergarten celebrated their 100th day after ours. We still enjoyed joining their parade, singning and counting with them. It was especially fun for our first graders who had Mrs. Spence, getting the chance to "give back" to her program.

100 Day Fun!

100 Day is Here!

It's a milestone that really matters most to students who are just learning about place value, and practicing their counting skills. We celebrated by making 100 year old portraits of ourselves with ripped paper. We also worked in pairs to create some beautiful designs using exactly 100 pattern blocks. The stories of what they would like to do when they are 100 years old are priceless!

1C Flea Market on Wednesday 2-6-13

Our class will hold a flea market on Wednesday. They may bring in 3 to 5 items that they wish to sell to their peers. This will be an "all sales final" event. All items may be sold for 15 to 50 cents (but only one will go for the 50 cents max). This will be an excellent opportunity for the children to have a real life experience involving coin counting and making change. Please send your child with items that they are willing to part with. Last year's sale included items like games, toys, books, stuffed animals, dolls, trucks and cars. If it interests your first grader, chances are, it will be appealing to another. Our students will also need to bring in a bag of coins of all varieties, totaling $1.50. These should NOT be the same coins they are using for their classroom work. All items and coins need to be in the classroom at 9:00 on Wednesday morning. Thanks!
